Change Account Password

You can change your Account Password at any time through the settings of mSecure. Perhaps you want to make it stronger, you routinely change your password or you want to change it if it is being used for another online account.

The password you use to unlock mSecure is called your account password, or your master password. If you know your account password, you can change it at any time. Additionally, all mSecure backups are secured with the account password in use at the time of the backup’s creation. Therefore, in order to restore a backup file, you will need to know the password that was in use when the backup was created.

Please note that mSecure accounts were introduced in version 5 (now mSecure 6). If you are using versions 3 or 4, your mSecure app is not connected to our account system. We recommend migrating to mSecure 6 for the best experience, and you can learn more here.

Do you need help coming up with a secure account password? You can learn how to choose a good account password here. Browse the section below that corresponds to your device.

iOS

  1. Open and unlock mSecure
  2. Tap the menu icon in the top left corner (3 stacked lines)
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Change Password

You can use Touch or Face ID, if enabled, to fill in your current password which is handy if you have forgotten it. If you have more than one device, you’ll need to finish the password change in each of the mSecure apps running on all your other devices.

NOTE: After the account password change, you will receive a new QR code email. The old QR code email/image will no longer work for authentication and should be deleted to avoid confusion in the future. Please make sure to save the new QR code in a safe location in case it's needed at a later time.

Open and unlock mSecure on the other devices with your old account password. This has to be done first, because the data currently stored locally in the app is encrypted using your old password. After you unlock the app with the old password, mSecure will tell you the password was changed on another device and take you back to the lock screen. Now your new password will be required to unlock the app in the future.

If somehow you have forgotten your old account password, but you are able to unlock mSecure on at least one other device and have access to all your information, you will need to reinstall the app on each iOS, Android and Windows device on which you cannot unlock mSecure. This will make it possible to sign in to your mSecure account using your new account password. If you have forgotten the old account password on a Mac, you don't need to reinstall mSecure. Instead, please follow the instructions in this article.

Android
