How to Migrate to mSecure 7 Using a *.mscx Backup File

This guide is for users with an older version of mSecure that only supports .mscx backup files. mSecure 7 cannot directly import from a .mscx file, but you can use an older version of mSecure to convert your backup file into a format that mSecure 7 can restore from.

Step 1: Install an Older Version of mSecure

Since mSecure 7 cannot restore from a .mscx backup file, you'll need to use an older version of mSecure that can. The following versions support .mscx backups and convert them into a .msim file that mSecure 5, 6, and 7 can use:

  • mSecure 3.5x for Mac and Windows.
  • mSecure 4.0x for Android.
  • mSecure 4.5 for iOS.

If you don't have access to mSecure 4 on Android or iOS, you can download previous versions of mSecure here

Step 2: Restore Your Data from the .mscx Backup

Once you've installed an older version of mSecure, follow these steps:

On mSecure 3.5x for Mac or Windows

  1. Open and unlock the app.
  2. Click File in the menu bar.
  3. Select Restore.
  4. Locate and select your .mscx backup file.
  5. Click Restore to import your data.

Step 3: Create a New Backup in .msim Format

After restoring your data in an older version of mSecure, create a new backup in .msim format, which is compatible with mSecure 7.

On mSecure 3.5x for Mac or Windows

  1. Open and unlock the app.
  2. Click File in the menu bar.
  3. Select Backup.
  4. Choose a save location (e.g., your Desktop).
  5. Save the .msim backup file.

Step 4: Restore the .msim Backup in mSecure 7

Now that you have a .msim backup file, you can restore it in mSecure on any platform.

On a computer (Recommended if Using Mac or Windows)

  • Open mSecure 7 on the same computer where you saved the .msim backup file.
  • Follow the Backup and Restore guide for Mac or Windows to restore your data.

On iOS or Android

If you prefer to restore on a mobile device, transfer the backup file via email:

  1. Email the .msim backup file to yourself.
  2. Open the email on your iOS or Android device.
  3. Download the .msim file.
  4. Follow the Backup and Restore guide for iOS or Android to import your data into mSecure 7.
