Passkeys: New in mSecure 7

Passkeys are a more secure way to sign in to websites and apps - without using a password at all. Instead of typing a password, you authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or your device PIN. The result is a sign-in experience that's faster, safer, and dramatically more resistant to phishing.

mSecure 7 brings full passkey support to your vault - you'll be able to create, store, and use passkeys alongside your existing passwords and OTPs. If you're new to passkeys, this guide covers the basics.

What a Passkey Actually Is

When you create a passkey, your device generates a pair of cryptographic keys:

  • A public key - stored by the website or app
  • A private key - stored securely on your device or in mSecure

These keys work together to verify your identity. The private key never leaves your device, and nothing is typed or transmitted that could be intercepted - eliminating many of the risks associated with passwords.

Why Passkeys Are Safer Than Passwords

Passkeys eliminate the most common password-related security problems:

  • No password reuse across sites
  • Impossible to guess - they're long, random cryptographic keys
  • Phishing-resistant - your device won't use a passkey on the wrong site
  • Protected by biometrics or a device PIN
  • Not vulnerable to database breaches - services store only the public key

Where Passkeys Are Supported

Support for passkeys is growing quickly. Many major services already offer passkey sign-in, including:

  • Google
  • Apple
  • Microsoft
  • Amazon
  • PayPal
  • eBay
  • TikTok

How You Use a Passkey

Using a passkey is simple:

  1. Choose Sign in with a passkey on the website or app.
  2. Approve the request with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello or your device PIN.
  3. You're instantly signed in.

No typing. No copying codes. No password resets.
