If mSecure ever went out of business (heaven forbid), would I be able to access my data?

I have backups of my mSecure files on an encrypted USB drive as well as the mSecure macOS app saved on that USB drive as well.  So I feel fairly secure.  But I have very important data in mSecure and if I was ever locked out of my data because mSecure went out of business or something crazy like that what would my options be?

Obviously you can prepare for every scenario and you have to weigh your risk factor.  But I'm curious what options I would have in this scenario?

Having a backup of the mac app makes me think I could always load it in a virtual machine running a supported macOS version and get my data that way.  But what other thoughts do you experts have on this?

mSecure is my favorite password manager btw!

Answer

Hi,

Thank you for contacting us. If the mSecure 6 app was taken off the App store and was not able to be installed, you will always be able to access the mSecure 6 app as long as it is kept installed on your devices and you know your password. Also, your data is stored locally on your devices and if you are using a syncing method, it is stored remotely as well. If anything happened to those syncing methods, you would still have access to your data on your devices.

mSecure 4 is our older app that has been off the App store for years now, but there are users that still use this app without issue. When an older application like this does not get updates, however, this increases the risk of bugs and other issues to arise with more OS updates on your devices. This is not an immediate issue that occurs however and you would have ample time to be able to print your data out of mSecure 6 or migrate your data to a new mSecure app if one was made.

The only safe method that I can think of that can still have some security that does not contain mSecure is a password protected PDF file that contains your mSecure data. This is not as secure as having your data in the mSecure app due to it not having the encryption that mSecure has, but this is a better option than having your data in a CSV file.
