Request to Downgrade back to 5.x Pro

I don't mind paying for upgrades per major version but not a monthly plan/yearly plan.

Example 4. x to 5. x

I logged into my computer today and noticed that 6.0 was installed on my machine automatically without my permission.  I understand that since I paid for 5.x Pro I get the stripped-down features of mSecure 6.0 for free.  What this tells me is that once 7.0 comes out my data will be a hostage to upgrade or lose my data.  No Thanks!

I don't do monthly or yearly plans because they stack up easy and I can't keep track they always end up charging me at the worst possible time and I occur a $32 bank fee.

I would rather pay by the version so I decide when to update, AKA: (When I get paid and think your software is worth it.)  With this new pricing plan, you are taking this out of my hands.  So I am forced to take it back by finding another software to use.

I never upgrade to the cutting edge until all the bugs are worked out...  For Example the 6.0

- The Record Editor Fields do not align up correctly on larger screens.

- The Light and Dark Options are Crap compared to 4.x and 5.x versions...

- Forced Premium Trial - No Way to Cancel out of it.. Adds extra crap in the way that I don't need.

- Several of my Records Crash the Software on PC but works fine on my Apple Phone.

I loved your software with my experience 4.x and 5.x and have suggested it to many of my students in the Army where I teach 25B (Information Technology Specialist) MOS.  No Referral because of profiting rules.... but I was glad to recommend it. 400/700 Students a year for the past 4 years. (Your software was a great example of easy it could be to keep up with tons of passwords, without having to recall any of them...)  Many people use one password for everything and a huge security risk.

With the new pricing plan, I will not be referring anyone else and I will not be using your software past the trial version.  I also will be sending past students to ditch the software once I find a suitable solution.  Even if I have to learn C++ and QT (www.qt.io) Open Source and build it myself.

I am so pissed off I could scream!!!

You could have at least given me the opportunity to upgrade when I wanted to instead of being thrust into bug-ridden software and forced to swim.

I logged in today to upgrade only to discover that mSecure is now ONLY subscription-based. Very disappointed! Before I moved from 1Password to mSecure, I asked if mSecure's Developers were considering a subscription service and was given a  firm assurance it would not happen—or if it ever did, a regularly updated basic—perhaps less feature-rich—purchased version would remain available.

This may be a fine revenue model for Developers, but, in my view, only a complete Fool would trust their Password Manager to a subscription model.

I accept policies change but am still a little annoyed.

Bye, mSecure, I am gone.

@Peter - Are you sure you did not give them the idea?  After searching around it seems the going trend is subscription service.  I myself will go back to Access Database or Excel before I pay a monthly fee.  I like being in control of my finances and buy when I am ready to upgrade.. (When I can afford it... )

I just logged in to upgrade from v5 and find mSecure is now subscription-based.  ANY subscription Password Manager is by definition inherently unsafe. I am disappointed and am bailing out. Goodbye.

@David. I don't think I gave them the idea because 1Password had just gone to a subscription model at the time, and since 1Password  is one of the "Biggies" in their field, they will have been aware of 1Password's move. Like you, I will write my own Manager in an encrypted spreadsheet. I did consider it when I left 1Password but was lazy about it.

I have many hundreds of passwords now. With them being such a critical element in computing in general and online life, I cannot afford to rely on outside developers blocking access if I miss a subscription payment.

@Peter  - I feel ya... I am porting everything over and asking for a refund.   See your email from mSecure about refunds.  One thing that sucks is that the export takes hours to sort out in excel and does not export images.  I don't want to be on the hook for subscription payments to my vital data.  Look at Bitwarden self-hosted option on Raspberry Pi.  I am super excited about it.

@Mike Reilley,

> 1) If you want a refund for a purchase, by all means, let me know and I'll either process a refund for you, or I'll help in any way I can to point you where you need to go to get the refund from one of > the app stores. mSeven Software has always had one of the most generous refund policies of any software company I'm aware of. We never want anyone to pay for something they don't want, and > we don't want anyone to be unhappy with a purchase they have made.

I  would like a refund.  I'm on Windows 10.  Please point me in the right direction on how to request the refund.

I had briefly looked at Bitwarden, but didn't think about running it on a pi.  I have about a dozen of those little things running various items, I surprised I didn't think of it.   I'm currently looking at KeePassXC, but not to excited about it, because it doesn't fit all of my needs. Thanks for bringing up the Pi, I think that is the direction that I am going to go myself.

The bad thing about exporting mSecure is that a person can only export it into csv format, and all of the fields make it difficult to sort.  I have nearly 600 items and I have records broken out into groups, types and then each record has multiple fields and none of them line up when exporting.  Really a super pain in the backside (better be clean, otherwise I get censored).  I found that if I put all of the separate fields into the notes, I can export and clean it up better in Excel.  Still a lot of work because I have to touch each and every record, and at 600 records, that's a lot to clean up.  Also, I don't know if other are experiencing this, but v6 has become a pig.  I think that it has a memory leak, because as I start to edit records, it takes a long time to open and save and then switch between records. The more I edit, the slower it becomes.  definitely time to move on.

Daryl

@Daryl - I ported over 993 passwords into Bitwarden.  It has all the features of mSecure 6 plus some that are only in the planning stages of mSecure 6 for free.  I discovered that 23 of my usernames and passwords were Pwaned...  I quickly changed those.

It was a pain with excel, but it was a good refresher from my IT days....

Here is the tutorial I used...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCJA1F72izc

I can currently access my passwords from the browser at home (It's on the PI), or browser from work if I VPN, Desktop Application, Apple IOS, and my MAC.  I can only sync from the house unless I install a VPN on my iPhone but I don't mind.

 @David,

Thank you very much for the tutorial.  I'm setting up the Pi right now.  Hopefully I can get Bitwarden running and I can then ditch msecure.

Daryl

@Mike Reilley,

You keep saying that you can't control when the app store updates installed apps.  But you (mSecure) do control if you submit the new version as a new app.

Somewhere in your organization, the decision makers read one too many "growth hack" guides, and decided to goose up the upgrade metrics by slipping in the new version as an update.  Fundamental changes in the data structure and pricing model are a new version and should not be foisted on existing paid users without their specific buy in and consent.

mSecure isn't for keeping track of music libraries or funny cat gif's.  It's for securing some of the most important personal information we have.  Your changes can lock people out of their bank accounts, their health care accounts, prevent them from paying their mortgages or taxes.

That requires a bit more care and concern than the various responses I've read on this forum.  Hostageware was used earlier in this thread, and I think it's an apt description.

Aside from the subscription model and deceptive marketing / prompts, the forced update altered the data I entrusted in the app.  My groups got wiped out, along with the modified timestamp.  Reverting to a backup loses several days of changes, which could lead to lost access.

I am upset by the forced changes and data corruption.  I am genuinely angry at the excuse making from mSecure's representatives.

@Daryl - let me know how it goes....

Follow the video and if you get stuck on anything... make sure to read the youtube description because some commands changed.. updated in detail by the author.

Follow the video and see what happens,  me  I kept getting stuck at this line.

(did not work for me) sudo mv bitwarden.crt bitwarden.key /ect/ssl/certs

It did not have permissions for the user... It may be a security thing.. since I have the latest..version... not sure... if you did not have issues... just ignore the workaround below. I do have PiHole and BitWarden both installed on the same ip on the same raspberry... I think I love docker!

So I did a workaround..

sudo mv bitwarden.crt bitwarden.key /usr/local/share/ca-certificates

sudo update-ca-certificates

This moves both the .crt and the .key into a writeable path then updates the certificates in the /ect/ssl/certs path as bitwarden.pem

not sure if the .crt or both files create the .pem files...

Next is to run the new build with the new certs you created...

(did not work for me) docker run -d --name bitwarden --restart unless-stopped -v /bw-data:/data -v /etc/ssl/certs:/ssl -e ROCKET_TLS='{certs="/ssl/bitwarden.crt",key="/ssl/bitwarden.pem"}' -p 8080:80 bitwardenrs/server:latest-arm32v6

Since I was not sure... I modified the above line to point to the new path where I uploaded the .crt and the .key

docker run -d --name bitwarden --restart unless-stopped -v /bw-data:/data -v /usr/local/share/ca-certificates:/ssl -e ROCKET_TLS='{certs="/ssl/bitwarden.crt",key="/ssl/bitwarden.key"}' -p 8080:80 bitwardenrs/server:latest-arm32v6

follow the video to install self-signed-ca-cert.crt to your devices. Don't forget you need to update the self-signed certificate every year.

keep me updated.

@Daryl - don't use the mSecure for BitWarden it's for mSecure 5.x  it will not look correctly... instead add a few test records and export a bitwarden.csv file  then use excel to match up the headers so it will import correctly.... otherwise it will be a giant mess.

@Peter If you have a V5 license, you don't have to sign up for a subscription. You have an Essentials account for at least 3 years, and even after that, we have no plans on charging our V5 users for the Essentials features.

@Brandon No one's data is being held hostage. Where have you gotten the notion that anyone's data is being held hostage? If you have a V5 license, you don't even have to pay for a subscription. You have all the features you had in mSecure 5 at no cost. How is that hostage holding? You have never, and will never have to pay any money to get your data out of mSecure and over to another app if you choose to do so. Even if you didn't have a license, we would give you free trial time so that you could use all of the features you needed to move your data. I just don't understand why you guys use this type of language when it is so unbelievably far from the truth?

If you are saying this because you ran into a message saying you need to upgrade on any of your devices, that was happening because the Android version was rolled out gradually, and in the period of time when it was not available for all users, you were also not able to download it from the Google Play Store. That's not holding data hostage, that is the app not being available yet on the Play Store. If you are one who experienced that, the app is now available to everyone as it is fully rolled out. You

@Everyone This thread has become difficult to navigate and keep track of who has been answered and who hasn't. I would like to be able to answer each person individually, and I should be able to do that now, as I have a bit more time on my hands.

In a previous post, I let everyone know that if you wanted to get a refund, to please let me know. If you are someone who wants a refund, please start a new discussion in the forum asking for a refund. I will respond as soon as possible and either process it myself or help point in the direction needed otherwise. Real quick, the only two stores I can process refunds for are Google Play and Paddle, which is the online seller we use for our website. If the subscription was made from inside the iOS, Mac or Windows app, the refund has to be requested from that particular app store, because they don't give 3rd party developers to ability to process refunds.

Just like everybody else I'm extremely upset with the automatic upgrade and to top that off mSecure 6 doesn't work at all on my PC. I can see there are 652 items in All Items but that number is grey and I can't see any of the actual items. So I can't get to any of my passwords on my PC or search them. Then I get an email with the fix to go get a backup. Since I've been backing up to msecure cloud you'd think that would be backup enough. I mean come on guys get your act together. On top of all that I upgraded to see if I could fix this quick because I really need my passwords and I thought they were screwing me somehow but that didn't fix it at all. Now I can CLEARLY see that I've upgraded and my subscription ends NEXT YEAR but just for fun the msecure team still has the Essentials Account count down which is now 25 days. So I guess I paid and still didn't get the upgrade to 6. Makes you kind of wonder how secure your data is doesn't it?
