Getting emails about subscription renewal - can't seem to log into an account

Being the untrusting type I didn't click on the link in the email, instead used a more direct approach.  The only problem seems to be that when I try to log in, it is telling me that I don't have an account.  I've been using the software for years and this is the first year that I recall being prompted for the renewal.
